Hate Flying? Me too...

There's very little in this life I love more than travelling. It's no surprise really when I've been doing it since I was just 11 months old (precise, I know!). Experiencing different cultures, getting that all important Vitamin D and ultimately just getting out of here for a couple of days.
While Instagram posts can make travelling seem luxurious and dreamy, this is not the case when you have Aviophobia or a fear of flying! You're probably wondering how someone who travels on planes more than the Luas could possibly be afraid, but alas, it's true.

My love of travelling always outweighs my fear of flying. That's not to say I didn't have many breakdowns and panic attacks on flights along the way. My hands and legs would go numb, my palms would sweat, I felt completely choked up and I even had myself convinced that if I made any movement it would affect the movement of the plane! Crazy yes, but it's called a phobia for a reason. Apologies if I was ever sat next to you during these instances....
Lately, I've found myself becoming a liker (not quite lover yet) of flying. With the help of online videos and chats with cabin crew I'm definitely getting better! Since so many people suffer with the same fear, and I'm due to fly to Berlin tomorrow so need some reminding, I wanted to share some of the vital info & tips that have helped me on the road to overcoming it.
1. Flying is the SAFEST mode of transportation. After the escalator that is!
2. You're at more risk driving to the airport than on the plane itself.
3. Despite what you may think, turbulence is NOT dangerous, just very bloody uncomfortable.
4. Air-pockets or the little dips you often feel are just like pot holes on the road.
5. Be prepared- pack well in advance so you're not stressing before you even get on the plane.
6. Keep yourself busy during the flight- read, watch a movie, listen to music, chat.
7. Breathe! Is it that surprising that taking a few deep breaths can really calm you down? I think not.
8. Rationalize; keep reminding yourself that cabin crew fly every day. If it wasn't safe, they wouldn't be doing it!
9. Enjoy it! Whether it's a girls weekend, a romantic getaway or your summer hols, you'll be there in a matter of hours so just keep thinking of all the things you'll be doing (or drinks you'll be having), and who knows, you might just grow to lo... like flying! Let's not get ahead of ourselves...
Happy Flying!
